Meet the Bowens

Vernon Bowen and Leigh Wright are no strangers to the blogosphere. In fact, they met through a random comment Leigh made on Vernon’s old Xanga blog site back in April of 2005. At this time, Leigh was working toward her Masters of Intercultural Studies at Alliance Theological Seminary in Nyack, New York, while Vernon was striving for a Masters of Divinity at Truett Theological Seminary in Waco, Texas. Following several months of a You’ve Got Mail-esque correspondence, Leigh and Vernon eventually met during Leigh’s end-of-summer visit to her hometown of Houston. Despite a somewhat awkward first date, both were quickly certain that they wanted to spend a lot more time together, despite the 1500+ mile distance between them. Two semesters later, after their respective graduations, Leigh moved backed to Houston to take a job as a Labor & Delivery nurse, and Vernon switched his residence to that vast, humid metropolis as well, taking a job as Minister to Students at a small Baptist church near downtown. Four months later, on December 23, 2006, they were engaged, and four months after that, married.

Leigh and Vernon do not have any children (yet), but do shower a lot of attention on a pair of incorrigible, good-for-nothing spaniels, Huck and Sadee, who continue to shed their black hair on just about everything, but at least provide their own unique brand of comedy. Leigh is devoted to her calling as a nurse, and despite the new role of middle school teacher at Black Forest Academy, she hopes to continue serving those in need in whatever capacity she can. Vernon is excited about the opportunity to teach American Literature using the creativity and theological/spiritual analysis he has incorporated into a variety of different ministries during his eight years as a church-based minister. He is also currently at work on his first novel, tentatively entitled Prodigal Road.

Leigh and Vernon, whom she has nicknamed “Bo,” enjoy a number of different hobbies. Aside from walking and playing fetch with their dogs, they both enjoy reading. Leigh favors memoirs and books on Christian faith, practice, and missions, while Vernon enjoys novels and short story collections, both contemporary and classic. They also love to go to the movies, though “Bo” is often known to turn this form of entertainment into a deep investigation of cultural and theological themes, no matter what genre of film they may be watching. Leigh and Bo’s favorite television show is The Office. Leigh’s other favorites are The Real Housewives of New York, Make Me a Supermodel, No Reservations, and Deliver Me. Bo’s other favorites include South Park, Scrubs, Family Guy, Heroes, Man vs. Wild, Arrested Development, and Seinfeld.  Leigh also enjoys scrap-booking, antiquing, praise & worship music, and exercising. Bo enjoys writing and blogging, folk and acoustic rock, European football (soccer), and cooking.

Leigh is a graduate of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor with a B.S. in Nursing, and from Alliance Theological Seminary with a Master in Intercultural Studies.

Bo is a graduate of Southwest Texas State University with a B.A. in English (w/ secondary teaching certification), and from George W. Truett Theological Seminary with a Master of Divinity.
