- Kandern is located within Die Schwartzwald (“the Black Forest”) in the southwestern edge of Germany, in the state of Baden-Wurttemberg (the capitol of which is Stuttgart). Kandern itself is located on the southwestern side of the Black Forest, on the edge of the Rhine Valley, not far from the German-Swiss border and the city of Basel, Switzerland.
- Baden-Wurttemberg is the third most-populated state in Germany, behind Nordrhein-Westfalen (with its capitol, Dusseldorf), and Bayern (also known as “Bavaria” with its capitol, Munich).
- By car, Kandern is about 7.5 hours from Berlin, 4.5 hours from Munich, 6.5 hours from Marseille, and 1 hour from Zurich.
- The town name, Kandern, means “on the Kander,” which is the stream that runs through town.
- The most famous person – at least to North Americans – to hail from Kandern was John Sutter, who moved to America and on whose land was discovered gold in 1848, sparking the California Gold Rush.
